Financing Your Flooring Project

New carpet, luxury vinyl, hardwood, laminate, or sheet vinyl will transform a home, creating a more inviting, beautiful, and updated space. With that being said, we understand that replacing flooring is not only a big design decision, but also a financial one. The reality is that most homeowners will need to save for years to have enough money to pay cash for their flooring project. One question we get asked over and over is what financing options are available for flooring projects. Read on to learn more about financing your flooring project.

Just a reminder that while we here at Johnson’s Flooring are your go to flooring experts, we are not financial experts. None of the following should be taken as financial advice and you should contact a financial professional before making any financing decisions.

What Payment Options are Available for Flooring?

Cash/Check
Some customers prefer to use money that they have saved up for their flooring project and pay it all up front. This takes away the concern of taking on additional debt (and potential interest payments with it) and gives you the ease of mind that your project is paid in full. However, if you are anything like most consumers, having that much money saved up at the exact moment when you would like new flooring isn’t realistic.

Personal Credit Cards
This is a common way to pay for flooring projects. Fees and interest charges vary by credit card but typically, you will be charged a high interest rate on any credit card balances not paid off. Depending on the credit card, interest may compound over time. This means that you could spend thousands more than the actual cost of the flooring project over the time it takes to pay off the balance. Additionally, many consumer credit cards cap purchases at limits lower than what is needed for a flooring project.

Home Equity
Using equity available in your home (difference between home’s value and what you still owe) is a popular way to finance large home improvement projects. There are equity percentage requirements to qualify and it can take several weeks to months to obtain financing. We suggest reaching out to your mortgage company for details. Although most flooring projects will not be a good fit for home equity financing, this is still a viable option for some projects.

Flooring Store Financing
Many flooring stores partner with financial companies to offer financing to their customers. This normally requires customers to be approved for the financing. For example, here at Johnson’s Flooring we partner with Shaw Floors to offer financing through Wells Fargo. Financing options vary but many offer 0% APR for a set period of time or no interest if paid in full. This allows you to take time to pay for your project with no additional interest (if the balance is paid off within the timeframe stipulated by the financing program).
