How The Carpet Installation Process Works

Have you ever wondered what the carpet installation process entails? This is a common question we get in our Clayton, OH and Springboro, OH flooring stores so we put together an article that walks through the steps of carpet installation. Keep in mind that the process will be fairly consistent no matter the company you go with, however, there are some differences. The below process goes through what carpet installation will look like if you choose Johnson's Flooring's professional installation services.

Step 1: Select Your Carpet

The first step in the carpet installation process is making your carpet selection. We have found that many of our clients like to see and feel the carpet samples that we have in our showrooms in Clayton and Springboro. All of our samples are available for you take home, allowing you to see what the carpet looks like in your own space. We suggest taking multiple options home so you can see them up against your furniture and other décor.

One of the big benefits of carpet is that there are almost limitless color options available that can match almost any home design. Check out our article listing the Top 5 Benefits of putting carpet in your home.

There are several carpet manufacturers in the market but the two most popular are Shaw and Mohawk, both of which are available in our showrooms. These manufacturers offer an array of options, from budget-friendly carpet that is prefect for selling a home all the way to luxury carpet. The two most common carpet fibers are nylon and polyester. Read this article we wrote to find out more about the different types of carpet.

PRO TIP
– During this stage of the process, many flooring stores will give you a ballpark estimate if you have an idea of the dimensions of the rooms where the new carpet will be installed. We suggest taking a few minutes to measure the length and width of your rooms so you have them on-hand.

Step 2: In-Home Measurement

Once you have made a carpet selection and if the ballpark estimate you received seems reasonable, the next step is scheduling an in-home measurement. The purpose of the in-home measurement is to collect exact measurements and assess the site so an accurate quote (sometimes called a proposal) can be created. This is also a good opportunity for the company to discuss where any necessary seams will be placed and for you to ask any questions. At Johnson’s Flooring, we promise to provide you with a quote within one business day of a completed in-home measurement.

PRO TIP
– Take time to read through the quote and make sure it clearly shows the product and services you are paying for before you enter into an agreement with the company. It’s not a bad idea to doublecheck the product so you can let the company know if they accidentally entered it incorrectly.

Step 3: Installation

Once the quote has been signed, it’s now time to prepare for the installation. The flooring company will schedule a day and time for the start of the carpet installation. On the day of the installation, you should expect at least two installers on-site to complete the job. They will introduce themselves and give you an overview of their plan for the installation. If moving furniture and removing the existing flooring is part of the job, that is where they will start.

Installation time will vary based on the size and number of rooms but many carpet installations can be completed in one day, getting you back to normal sooner than other types of flooring installations!

PRO TIP
– Make sure you remove small items and electronics from your furniture pieces and clear out closet floors prior to the arrival of the installers. While most flooring companies will take care of moving furniture, it is a good idea to move breakable items yourself to avoid any possible damage!

Step 4: Post-Installation

Now it’s time to enjoy your new carpet! The flooring company will have information about the warranty your product carries and it’s a good idea to keep a copy of it for your records. Make sure to reach out to the flooring company ASAP with any questions or concerns about your new carpet. At Johnson’s Flooring, we offer a lifetime installation warranty, giving you the peace of mind that any installation issues will be remediated free of charge.

To prolong the life of your flooring, regular vacuuming is very important. It is also a good idea to have your carpet professionally cleaned every 12-18 months. Check out our article on cleaning and maintaining carpet for more tips!
